Considering the fact that Friedrich
Air Cleaner is primarily an air conditioning
company which developed the Friedrich
C90B only as a sideline, it is strange that
it has received such favor three years in a row. That fact is also
somewhat irritating to the many companies which devote themselves
entirely to producing good air purification equipment.
So why is the C90B number one when there are other excellent air
cleaners on the market including the well-known and established Austin
Air, the quiet and aesthetically-pleasing Blueair Air Cleaners, the impressive
newcomer, IQAir, as well as the maker of combination products like
Air-O-Swiss?
The magazine chose the C90B because it is does a good job at reducing
dust and smoke and has washable filters. The washable aspect is
important to its readers who are typically very cost-conscious. Clearly
if dust and the particulate from smoke are the primary problem in a
household, and the owner has the time and self-discipline to wash the
filters, the C90B is an excellent choice.
The magazine did not do well, however, in addressing the other problems
that people with respiratory problems face. For people who are
chemically-sensitive, the magazine suggested eliminating the sources of
the problem. It is not always feasible to throw out your carpet,
upholstery, or pressed-wood furniture, or to get rid of a cherished
family pet. Smoking cannot always be banned from the indoors. It is not
always possible or desirable to keep windows open. Other types of air
cleaners can do a better job helping allergenics and asthmatics who are
also chemically-sensitive. They can also help children and the elderly
simply to breathe easier from a reduction in airborne toxins. For
chemical sensitivity, Austin Air Cleaner products far exceed the C90B.
The quietness of a air cleaners is particularly important to some, and
not at all important to others who have lots of background noise going
on anyway. The Friedrich C90B is not particularly quiet, and the plates do making
a popping sound from time to time. The Blueair air cleaners are designed
to moves air
over a large surface area makes it a quieter unit.
